China needs open and mature capital markets to support its economic growth going forward. Yet, despite numerous reform pronouncements, the country’s equity, debt and derivatives markets remain underdeveloped. Bank loans remain the dominant source of financing for Chinese companies, and the domestic shadow banking system also still looms large.
The last two years were a period of prolonged volatility in the Chinese stock market, while capital continued to flow out of the country at a non-decreasing rate. The spectre of persistent capital outflows continues to hang over the Chinese economy over the course of the current year. China’s financial markets have become systemically important for the global financial system. This, in turn, has put the responsibility onto the country’s regulators to speedily push through the needed reforms.
At the European Chamber’s Financial Services Conference 2017, a host of speakers from industry, investment banks, law firms and the regulatory side will discuss how China’s financial markets are becoming more globalised.
