On 9th January, the European Chamber was invited to attend a seminar organized by the Shanghai Development and Reform Research Institute (the Institute) to discuss Shanghai's future development. The Institute is an affiliated research organisation to the Shanghai Municipal Development and Reform Commission.

All participants agreed that Shanghai possesses advantages compared to other areas of China in terms of its social security, legal system, infrastructure, and educational institutions, and should maintain these advantages in the future. However, Shanghai needs increase its efforts to create a better business environment in order to maintain its core competitiveness. At the same time, Shanghai should actively seek resources from the central authorities, carry out important pilot reforms, and promote its successful experiences across the rest of the country.

At the end of the meeting, Ms Helei Fu, Government Affairs Director of the European Chamber’s Shanghai Chapter, presented the Shanghai Position Paper 2018/2019 to Mr Wei Lu, Vice Dean of the Institute.
