Meeting with the State Administration for Market Regulation and the Standardisation Administration of China on Standards on Environmental Technology and Climate Change

The Chamber was invited to the event on supporting innovation through standardization from the perspectives in the sectors of environmental technology and climate change organised by the Embassy of Canada and the Standards Council of Canada. Through three engaging presentations made by Ms Chantal Guay, CEO of Standards Council of Canada (SCC), Mr Xu Xinjian, Director General, Department of Laws and Regulations, State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) and Mr Xiao Han, Director General, Industrial Standards Department I, Standardisation Administration of China (SAC), the participants not only learned about how standardization supports innovation but also the international cooperation on standards to supporting industry including business-led innovation, in using international standards and conformity assessment activities to develop new products and services, and to access global markets and supply chains. 

In addition, DG Xu also shared the updated information on the process of reshuffle of SAMS along with the main changes on standardization system upon the effect of the newly revised Law on Standardization. DG Han also illustrated the policies, development and international cooperation on carbon emission management standardization. A Q&A session was followed and moderated by Mr John Walter, President of International Organization for Standards (ISO). The Chamber representatives raised the questions relating to bilateral and multi-lateral recognition on standards, inconsistent enforcement on standards at local level and coordination among government agencies on standardization.

At the end of this meeting, Chamber National Vice Chair of Environment Working Group Dr Christoph Schrempp presented the European Chamber Position Paper 2018/2019 to DG Xiao Han and President John Walter respectively.
