Over the past decades, a trend has arisen among Chinese youth to go abroad for university studies to increase their chances of landing a great job upon returning to China. Among the millions of expected rewards for studying abroad, the most coveted one is succeeding professionally.
However, upon returning to China with a foreign diploma and getting integrated into China’s job market, returnees’ career achievements vary widely. Some mange to set up phenomenal unicorn companies or rise up through company ranks, while some end up leading an ordinary life, without great differences when compared with domestic universities graduates.
Given the remarkable economic development achieved by China in recent years, more and more Chinese students choose to return to develop their careers or fund various start-ups here. According to statistics by the Ministry of Education, over 480,900 overseas Chinese students returned to China in 2017, bringing the total number of returnees to over 3.13 million since 1978.
The European Chamber is pleased to invite you to join us and explore what skills Chinese overseas graduates hold and lack, what are the top reasons for them to return to China, what are the top factors in their relocation decisions within the country, what they expect from prospective employers and what employers currently offer them, what are the most sough skills on the China job market and if Chinese young graduates do indeed have a competitive edge over domestic graduates.
