China and the EU have jointly expressed their commitment to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Circular Economy at the 20th China-EU Summit. Both stand to gain from aligning on policies that support the transition to a circular economy, which can unlock new sources of economic growth and innovation while benefiting people and the environment.
With both China and the EU playing a prominent role in international relations and trade, any acceleration towards a low carbon, regenerative circular economy would have a global impact.
China’s current development favours a circular economy, including substantial investments in renewable energy, rapid development of digital technologies, and a boom in asset-sharing platforms. Pioneering Chinese companies and initiatives, such as Y-closet and Mobike are actively embracing a circular economy approach. The MoU is expected to set the scene for greater sharing with European counterparts of best practices already in place in China, and vice versa.
