China is already more digitized than many foreign observers appreciate. China is one of the world’s largest investors and adopters of digital technologies, is home to one-third of the world’s unicorns (start-ups valued at over $1 billion), and possesses the unique scale to drive rapid commercialization of digital business models. This is not to mention the opportunity to draw from more internet users than the European Union and the United States combined.
The impact of China’s digital economy is rapidly becoming a global story. In the last two years China’s big three internet companies (BAT) made 35 overseas acquisitions. By expansion through mergers and acquisitions, the export of new business models and technology partnerships, China has the potential to shape the world’s digital frontier for decades to come.
The European Chamber is delighted to welcome Jonathan Woetzel, Director of the McKinsey Global Institute, to share the key takeaways from his recent discussion paper ‘China’s digital economy: A leading global force’. This paper will form the basis of a major upcoming report exploring the potential scope of China’s digital economy and the impact China's digital players are having on both the domestic and global business landscape.
