In December 2015, Wired Magazine published an article entitled “How a Nation of Tech Copycats Transformed into a Hub for Innovation”. As Chinese companies have started to shake their titles as the “Google of China” or the “Tesla of China”, and as domestic tech companies such as Huawei, Alibaba or Mobike have started to move into, and be replicated themselves in other markets, the question of ‘are Chinese companies capable of innovation?’ has been answered.

The majority of China success stories in the tech industry, be it domestic or foreign companies, have been based on a commitment to business model innovation; on a company’s ability to build on ideas incubated abroad and to adapt them to the local market and to further develop integrated digital ecosystems.

The European Chamber is delighted to welcome Professor Lehmann Ortega, HEC Paris School of Business, and Paul Pan, Managing Director, Gaofeng Advisory, to lead a discussion on business model innovation. Professor Ortega teaches this subject at one of Europe’s leading EMBA programs and quite literally wrote the book on how to challenge traditional business models. Mr Pan has spent his career focusing on digital disruption in China, previously as COO of Google China. He now advises leading multinationals on how to adapt their global operating models to suit China specific needs.

After graduating from HEC (1993), Laurence first worked as a consultant in strategy. She then joined Sup de Co Montpellier (France) as a Director of Graduate and MBA programs. Since 2009, she is an Affiliate Professor at HEC Paris Strategy and Business Policy department. She is director of several corporate custom made programs at HEC Executive Education and the academic director of the Msc in Strategic Management. Since 2006, she holds a PhD in Management from the University of Aix en Provence.

Her research focuses on strategic innovation, especially in incumbent firms in mature and low-tech industries. In this context, she deals with business model innovation as a response to sustainable development constraints and with its consequences in multinational firms, in particular the learning process and the questioning of mental schemes. Laurence co-authored Strategor, the leading strategic management textbook in France (translated into 4 languages). She has also published several articles in reviews and periodicals such as Long Range Planning and M@n@gement. She is the co-author of “Odyssey 3.14 Reinvent your business model”, an original approach combining innovation and strategy. Laurence received the 2014 and 2016 Pierre-Vernimmen-BNP-Paribas Teaching Award.

Paul Pan had more than 20 years of industry and management consulting experiences. He has extensive consulting experience in SOEs, POEs and MNCs with a focus on health care, and other B2B and B2C sectors. Pan brings first-hand experiences in globalization, M&A and PMI by working at Lenovo & Google where he was previously COO for China.
