Following the result of the referendum in the UK last month, where the UK decided to leave the European Union, it's only natural to ask: “What happens now?” These uncertainties extend to the type of alternative economic agreements / treaties that the UK will be able to put in place with the rest of the EU Member States as well as with the rest of world.
With Prime Minister Theresa May clearly stating that “Brexit means Brexit”, the future of UK will depend on the new relationship it can forge with the EU. Many remain optimistic that it is highly probable that a favourable trade agreement would be reached as there are advantages for both sides in continuing a close commercial arrangement.
For multinational companies and foreign businesses in China, the question is whether Brexit will affect China’s globalisation strategy and, if so, how. While China is the EU’s second largest trading partner and a major exporting competitor, and also an increasingly important source of investment. Among the EU countries, the UK has been an important economic partner for China. But to what extent does China’s trade with the UK hinge on the UK’s position in the EU, and would thus likely be affected by Brexit?
The European Chamber is delighted to have Ms. Nina Trentmann, UK Business Correspondent, DIE WELT, Professor David Gosset, Director of the Academia Sinica Europaea, CEIBS and Mr. David Percival, Managing Director International Business Development, Deloitte, as they discuss the implications and consequences of a post Brexit world.
- What are the different options open to the UK and EU in negotiating a new relationship following the Brexit vote?
- What is the range of outcomes that might result, and which are the most likely?
- How might the UK’s and the EU’s relationships with China be impacted?
- How should European, including British, businesses operating in China respond?
