European Commissioner Kuneva for product safety meets European Chamber and Guangdong officials on her PRC visit

Guangzhou, 11th June 2008. The European Commissioner for Consumer Protection, Meglena Kuneva, accompanied by Head of the Delegation of the European Commission to China, Ambassador Serge Abou, started her two-day visit to Guangzhou today. She plans to meet with government officials and representatives from China Exit-Entry Inspection and Quarantine Bureau (CIQ), as well as to visit a local quality control and testing centre.

During a VIP dinner organised by the Guangzhou office of the European Chamber on the evening of 11th June, Commissioner Kuneva explained the European Union's policy and approach to global governance of product safety and to shared global responsibilities. Participants of the dinner included Mr. Wang Xin, Director General of China General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ), Mr. Li Qingxiang, Deputy Director General of Guangdong CIQ and other high ranking representatives from AQSIQ and CIQ. Company representatives from various industries, including toys, pharmaceuticals, automotive, electrical appliances, testing and certification companies were present at the dinner. Mr. Li Qingxiang delivered a speech calling for enhanced cooperation with Europe on safety and product quality.

The European Chamber organised VIP meetings between Commissioner Kuneva and European Consulates General in Guangzhou, as well as with senior managers from the above-mentioned industries on 11th June.

Since November 2006 Commissioner Kuneva has been responsible for the European Union's Consumer Protection Policy for the European market, which in terms of sales volume is by far the largest single market in the world, with a population of over 500 million. Previously she was Bulgaria's Minister for European Affairs, Deputy Foreign Minister, and the Chief Negotiator for Bulgaria's accession to the European Union in 2006.

The purpose of Commissioner Kuneva's visit to China during 9th – 13th June is to take stock of progress with regard to the commitments made during her visit to China in July 2007 to strengthen EU-China product safety controls. She aims to discuss plans for future co-operation, in particular the revision of the current EU-China Memorandum of Understanding on consumer product safety and the preparation of the first EU-China-US trilateral summit on product safety in Brussels this November.

欧盟负责消费者保护事务委员库内娃来华访问，会见中国欧盟商会和广东政府官员

广州，2008年6月11日。欧盟负责消费者保护事务的委员梅格莱娜·库内娃在欧盟委员会驻华代表团团长赛日·安博的陪同下，于今日开始对广州进行为期两天的友好访问。访问期间，库内娃委员将会见出入境检验检疫局的官员及代表，并参观地方质量控制和检测中心。

6月11日晚，在中国欧盟商会广州办公室举办的招待晚宴上, 库内娃委员介绍了欧盟在全球产品质量管理和全球责任分担方面的政策和工作情况。晚宴来宾包括国家质量监督检验检疫总局检验监管司司长王新、广东出入境检验检疫局副局长黎庆翔以及其他来自质检局和出入境检验检疫局的代表。来自玩具、医药、汽车、电子、检测认证等行业的欧盟企业代表们出席了晚宴。广东出入境检验检疫局副局长黎庆翔在宴会上致辞，呼吁加强与欧盟在产品质量安全方面的合作。

在中国欧盟商会的安排下，库内娃委员于同日在广州会见了欧盟各成员国驻广州领事馆的总领事以及上述行业的欧盟企业代表。 

自2006年11月起，库内娃委员主要负责欧盟消费者保护事务。在销售量方面，欧盟市场是迄今全球最大的独立市场，人口有五亿多。2006年以前，库内娃女士曾先后担任保加利亚欧洲事务部长、外交部副部长，并在2006年保加利亚加入欧盟的谈判中担任主要谈判代表。

库内娃委员于6月9日至13日对华进行访问。去年7月访华时，她曾承诺要加强中欧产品安全控制，而此行的主要目的便是考察此项工作的进展情况。此次访华期间，她将有机会探讨未来合作计划，尤其是对当前中欧消费产品安全谅解备忘录的修订，以及将于11月份在布鲁塞尔举行的欧盟、美国与中国大陆三方峰会的准备工作。
