Online retail sales have experienced phenomenal growth in recent years and are being viewed by many as the darling of the Chinese consumer growth story. The growth rate over the next four years is expected to record a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 22.3%, reaching RMB4.5 trillion by 2017 which will be the equivalent of 13.8% of the retail sales volume up from 9.4% in 2013.
However, online retailers are faced with growing competition in this nascent market, and while some operational costs for retailers have disappeared, other have arisen. Retailers operating online stores have to spend more money on warehousing and logistics costs, while smaller, lesser known retailers will have to spend a great deal of money on an ongoing basis to develop site traffic, all of which will eat into profit margins, especially as the market matures.
Although lots of people thought that online retailing would cannibalise retail store sales and that «clicks» were going to slowly kill brick-and-mortar stores, the opposite has happened. Rather than competing with each other, the online, store and mobile sales channels actually complement each other very well. When a retailer handles it properly, the implementation of an omni-channel strategy results in a stimulus for sales. Mr. Samuel Guillaume
Samuel Guillaume, Cegid APAC Business Development Manager, has more than 12 years of experience in the retail industry at Cegid. He moved to Asia in 2008 as the Cegid Asia Project Manager in charge of deploying Yourcegid Retail for a leading international luxury retailer. Samuel has worked with numerous international brands across Europe and Asia including L’Occitane en Provence (+1,000 stores worldwide).

Ms. Jessie Qian
Jessie is an Audit partner in KPMG Huazhen (SGP). Jessie joined KPMG San Francisco Information, Communications, and Entertainment (ICE) practice in 1997 and relocated to KPMG China in 2003. She has more than 17 years of experience providing financial statement audit and audit of internal control services.
Prior to Jessie’s transfer from San Francisco to China in 2003, she worked largely with SEC companies and fast growing privately held companies. She was involved in the IPO and secondary offering of several clients and developed significant experience with SEC reporting. After Jessie’s transfer to China in 2003, she is primarily responsible for serving privately owned Chinese enterprises to be listed in the US capital markets and major international clients with significant operations in China.
