Linde Presentation Euro Chamber Attendees only |
Under the 14th Five Year Plan (2021-25), China has devoted significant resources to the construction of renewable energy capacity, building large wind, solar and hydroplants in the western provinces. As part of its 30/60 carbon neutrality goals, China aims for renewable energy to exceed fossil fuel capacity by 2025. Under China’s definition of renewable energy sources, this target has been reached two years ahead of schedule, now making up over half of the country’s power capacity. Meanwhile, China’s renewable exports are also booming, with the country controlling more than 80 per cent of the global market for key manufacturing stages of solar panels. China is also on track to double its wind and solar energy capacity and hit its 2030 energy targets five years early if all prospective plants are built and commissioned.
However, inconsistent utilisation of resources, particularly due to climate-change induced power shortages means that China's energy consumption mix remains weighted toward fossil fuels, with China’s coal usage exceeding the rest of the world combined in 2022. With new advances in battery, electric vehicles and solar, how will China shift away from coal as the dominant power source, and what advancements are needed in energy storage for a secure energy future? What steps are industry players taking to optimise their energy efficiency ahead of the anticipated summer energy shortages in 2023?
Join the European Chamber and various industry experts to take a closer look at the renewable energy outlook for the rest of the year.
