China is the largest renewable-energy investor in the world, with over 120 GW wind power capacity installed in 2015. However, while the country may be the global leader in renewable energy investment, it is also the leader in the percentage of that energy that never reaches consumers. China’s curtailed wind energy averages about 21% nationally, reaching as high as 40% in some provinces, mainly due to a lack of proper grid integration.
In this context, China needs a strong grid for renewable energy sources integration, market efficiency and security of supply, while at the same time it needs to seek distributed solutions, including energy storage methods.
A promotion of green power dispatch, giving priority, in distribution and dispatching, to renewable power generation and fossil fuel power generation of higher efficiency and lower emission levels would also be welcomed.
This and other solutions and proposals will be elaborated by the speakers. The European Chamber is delighted to have Mr. Giorgio Fortunato, director for Asia at Vestas, Ms. Ying Yuan, Deputy head of Climate & Energy Unit at Greenpeace East Asia, Junda Lin, Senior Associate at Strategy& (PWC) and Ms. Shi Jingli, Researcher at the Energy Research Institute (ERI) to discuss the latest developments in the renewable energy sector in China.
