Background
Green aviation has become a global focus. In 2008, the EU began its “Clean Sky” research program. Clean Sky is the most ambitious aeronautical research program ever launched in Europe. Its mission is to develop breakthrough technologies to significantly increase the environmental performances of airplanes and air transport, resulting in less noisy and more fuel efficient aircraft. In 2010, 190 countries, at the 37th conference of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), passed a comprehensive resolution in environmental protection which promises to achieve zero growth of emissions by 2020 and net carbon dioxide emissions will be cut to 50 percent by 2050, compared to 2005. A green aviation revolution, including a series of new technologies, is emerging in the aviation industry. For example, the FAA implemented the Continuous Lower Energy, Emissions and Noise Program as well as the Alternative Fuels Project. Additionally, NASA implemented their own environmental aviation plan.
Green aviation is very important to the development of China’s aviation enterprises. With the rapid growth in the aviation industry, and an energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions surge ahead, energy conservation and emissions reduction will become even more crucial. China has raised its emissions reduction target to cutting 40%-45% of per capita GDP carbon dioxide emissions by 2020 from 2005 levels, and placed stricter requirements on civil aviation energy conservation and emissions reduction. A low-carbon economy has become a competitive edge among countries as well as a trend in new international development. As a highly internationalized industry, civil aviation will be the first to face the challenge.
