The European Chamber South China is pleased to invite you to join the Valeo CDA China R&D Center Tour. During this event, the chamber's latest report China’s Innovation Ecosystem: The Localisation Dilemma will be launched.
This report on European companies’ research and development (R&D) operations in China outlines the wide spectrum of strategies enterprises are deploying to mitigate risks and maximise their competitiveness. Some firms have opted to increasingly integrate their China R&D with global efforts, while a host of risks are deterring others from engaging in innovation in China at all.
It comes at a time when China’s abandonment of its zero-COVID policy has seen a gradual resumption of people-to-people exchanges between Europe and China, which is a very positive development for business. However, this is taking place against the backdrop of the steady escalation of the US-China struggle for technological supremacy, all while geopolitical factors, such as the war in Ukraine, are making the situation even more complex.
During this event, the host company, Valeo, will share how the R&D service centre had been originally structured, the cooperation between the European and Chinese teams, and will talk about the R&D activities in China and how did that impact business development of Valeo group in China. The IPR WG Chair will then cover the topic of IP as the protection of intellectual property is a necessary condition for innovation to flourish. Finally, the AI application in smart manufacturing will be presented as well, before the Q&A with the audience.
This event will be organized with limited onsite seating to be reserved on a first-come-first and member-come-first served basis.

Speakers
Ms. Mariann Nagy
Mariann Nagy is a policy and communications manager at the European Chamber. In her role, she contributes to the Chamber’s reports and other publications and to the production of the Chamber’s two podcast series, China ShortCuts and China Dispatches. She is a sinologist by training, with a professional background in journalism and translation.
Mr. Jun Qiao
He was previous senior RD & Project Manager of Connected Car Control Department in Valeo Interior Control (Shenzhen) Ltd, and served in Valeo for nearly 12 years.
In 20th century, he works in the Chinese Academy of Sciences as a research engineer in Institute of Acoustics. He joined automobile industry from 1996 in New Zealand and till now.
Mr. Elliot Papageorgiou
Elliot Papageorgiou is Gowling WLG's Head of IP Strategy in China. With over 25 years of experience, Elliot has practised intellectual property (IP) law across several continents, including Oceania, Europe and Asia.
Based in Gowling WLG's Shanghai office, Elliot counsels international clients on contentious and non-contentious IP matters, with special focus on IP value-growth and value-extraction, strategic portfolio development, and cross-border IP enforcement and infringement litigation in China and across the APAC region. Elliot supports a number of embassies in China with current IP developments and issues, and is regularly consulted by the European Delegation and European Intellectual Property Office in China. He is the former National Chair of the European Chamber in China (EUCCC)'s Intellectual Property Rights Working Group (IPR WG) and has held various positions within the IPR WG since 2006.
Elliot has represented a number of Fortune 500 companies and other multinationals in patent litigation. Other recent client briefs include developing IP strategies for, a number of Europe's leading venture capitalist funds; strategically advising a global leader in cutting-edge semiconductor fabrication, a global leader in quantum computing technology, global engineering and manufacturing conglomerates, as well as some of Europe’s best-known Engineering firms.
As part of his disputes and litigation practice, Elliot guided a range of complex patent litigation, as well as trademark and copyright litigation cases by way of petition for re-hearing (certiorari) before China’s Supreme People’s Court (SPC) on a number of occasions. One notable such case, was ranked number one in the SPC’s “Top 50 IP Cases of the Year.”
Throughout his legal career, Elliot has consistently been recognized as a leading practitioner in his field by IAM Patent 1000, IAM Strategy 300, World Trademark Review 1000, Managing Intellectual Property, Chambers and Partners, Legal 500, Who’s Who Legal, and WIPR, just to name a few.
In addition to his practice, Elliot regularly teaches IP courses at various universities and has given seminars for various industry and professional organisations in China and internationally.
Mr. Gianluca Giorgi
Mr. Gianluca Giorgi is the Vice Chair of the European Chamber South China Chapter and the CEO of Shenzhen ES Automation Consulting Ltd which focuses on strategic mentors in Robotics and Automation projects. As a Business Innovation and Application Certified Expert in MIT Sloan Blockchain Technologies, he also holds a post as the member of the International Blockchain Council and member in the Information Technology Working Group.
Mr. Matthias Sander
Matthias is one of the very few Shenzhen-based foreign journalists. He is China Technology Correspondent with Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ), a Swiss daily with one of the biggest networks of foreign bureaus among the German-language press. Matthias arrived in Shenzhen in September 2021, after having spent a year in Taiwan during the beginning of the pandemic. His coverage focuses on the intersection of technology and politics, the economy, society, and the individual. Major topics include China’s technological ambitions, innovation, tech companies, relations with the West, surveillance, propaganda, and the everyday use of tech.
In prior roles at NZZ, Matthias was a Zurich-based reporter-at-large, a co-editor of the Society section, and a news journalist. He holds degrees in political science and sociology from Sciences Po Bordeaux and the University of Stuttgart.
