European Business in China - Business Confidence Survey Launch 2024 in Chengdu and Chongqing

On 29th August and 30th August 2024, the European Chamber Southwest China Chapter held the Business Confidence Survey Launch in Chengdu and Chongqing respectively. The two sessions attracted more than 230 participants in total from consulates, local governments, member companies and partners to attend. The guests learnt about the key findings of this year’s survey, as well as the main challenges and observations of business prospects for Southwest member companies.

Adam Dunnett, Secretary General of the European Chamber, shared the key findings of the 2024 Business Confidence Survey report from a national perspective. One key takeaway from Adam’s speech is that there is a negative cycle in the making. European businesses are increasingly worried about the Chinese economy. Optimism over the near/medium term outlook is fading.

Massimo Bagnasco, Vice President of the Chamber and Chair of European Chamber Southwest China Chapter, focused on the evaluation results of the business environment in the Southwest region, including investment confidence, profits of EU enterprises, and human resource challenges. Regarding market opening, Southwest China has the highest rate of respondents reported market opening (74%). And highest rate of respondents (58%) of Southwest China reported revenue increases compared to 2022. During the presentation, Massimo mentioned that the survey results show that member companies gave positive evaluations of Chongqing's business environment and urban development.
