Dear Working Group Members,
The European Chamber is delighted to invite you to join the next Joint Working Group Meeting (Auto components, Environment, Research and Development and ICT): Powering the Cloud: How China’s Internet Industry Can Shift to Renewable Energy at 10.00-11.30am, 18th of December, 2019. The meeting will take place in Beijing and Shanghai jointly via the video system and the speaker will be in our Beijing office.
China’s data centre sector currently consumes over 2% of China’s electricity and that share is growing rapidly. Over 70% of the electricity consumed by the sector is generated from coal power and procured from the grid. Such reliance on coal power coupled with its rapid growth has raised concerns over the sector’s growing carbon footprint and environmental impact.
Meanwhile, China is home to more renewable energy capacity than any other country in the world. By the end of 2018, solar installation capacity exceeded 175 GW and wind had surpassed 185 GW, more than Europe’s entire solar and wind capacity. Since 2015, power market reforms have created unprecedented opportunities for companies to procure renewable energy via a diverse set of mechanisms.
During the meeting, Ms. Ruiqi Ye, a leading contributor to the recent Greenpeace East Asia study, Powering the Cloud: How China’s Internet Industry Can Shift to Renewable Energy, will share with you the overview of China’s data centre sector and how it can shift towards renewable energy.
