European Chamber Seeks Dialogue with the Chinese Authorities on the New NGO Law Go back »

2016-04-29 | Beijing

The European Chamber is seeking an open dialogue with the Chinese authorities in order to contribute to a socially beneficial NGO law.

Under the new law, foreign NGOs will be required to secure a “professional supervisory unit” in order to remain in China, which will add uncertainty and unnecessary obstacles to their operations.

European business relies on NGOs in areas including: research and market development, as well as customer, community and stakeholder engagement. Many also play an important role in their corporate social responsibility activities. As the increase in the administrative burdens for foreign NGOs will be significant, they might find it increasingly unappealing to stay in China. This will deprive the Chinese marketplace of an important catalyst for positive change and international businesses of a trusted partner.

As openness and acceptance of civil society is a sign of confidence and strength, a country of China’s global stature should reach out to NGOs in a cooperative manner, and we hope that the law will be implemented in this fashion.
