Throughout the past few years, the EU has been revamping its regulatory toolbox in order to better address emerging economic, geopolitical, technological and climate challenges. This expanding toolbox includes instruments aiming at combatting economic distortions and creating a level-playing field in the Single Market, ensuring reciprocity with third countries in areas like procurement and combatting coercive actions initiated by those countries, fostering sustainable processes and preventing carbon leakage among industry players. As number of these regulations will impact the China operations of European companies, the European Chamber brings to you the Interpreting the EU’s Toolbox Series, where experts will provide an overview of the instruments that are being rolled out. The fourth episode of the series will focus on the Anti-Coercion Instrument (ACI), and it will take place on 5th March 16:00 online.

The annual Central Economic Work Conference was held in Beijing on December 12, 2023. The conference comprehensively reviewed the economic work of 2023 and noted that China's economy has achieved a recovery, with solid progress made in high-quality development during the year.

However, the meeting also highlighted the challenges that China still faces, including lack of effective demand, overcapacity in some sectors, lackluster social expectations, certain risks and hidden problems, bottlenecks in the domestic circulation, as well as rising complexity, severity, and uncertainty of the external environment. It emphasized the importance of being mindful of potential dangers and effectively responding to and solving these problems.

Ten countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) plus Australia, China, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea have just signed one of the world’s largest regional free trade agreements: Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). Notably, this agreement is the second in Asia to happen without participation from the United States, signaling a leadership tilt towards Asia and a great step towards multilateral trade integration in the region. An agreement so far-reaching surely comes with geopolitical and economic implications, among others.
