China is not the same place to do business that it was just a few short years ago. For the right companies and adventurous entrepreneurs, however, this new economic reality can offer not just challenges, but opportunities.
While the days of blockbuster growth may be over, measures introduced by the central government during this month’s Two Sessions could demonstrate a recognition of the need to stimulate sustainable, high-quality growth. Whether these initiatives are enough to help China navigate the significant headwinds that it faces – including everything from demographics to sluggish global demand and the unpredictable results of the upcoming US election – remains to be seen. Furthermore, a continuing shift in focus away from business and the economy toward politics and security raises questions as to the future shape of China’s economic landscape. Nevertheless, the Chinese market remains vast, with an entrepreneurial population and a foothold in some of tomorrow’s vital industries, like electric vehicles and solar energy.
