China is now entering a new phase of development with more focus on their own brands and exports, as well as on their development of welfare and health systems and internal consumption of goods and services. In this context, recent developments regarding the food industry as well as the health industry in China are illuminating examples.
Dr. Christie will give an overview of the main issues in the current Food Safety and Health reform issues, and comment on them with perspectives from his political and professional experience in Norway, Europe and USA. He will shed light on the implications of these reforms for the development of China as well as for foreign and domestic businesses in China as in the world at large.
Food safety and its regulation according to international standards and recommendations is at the core of a level playing field for the smooth internationalization of food trade and production, as well as for the development towards industrial standards for high quality and low risk production.
Health sector reform is a global challenge, but where Chinas ambitions are among the broadest and deepest in the world. The new framework to be evolved will have deep impact on the internal markets and new business opportunities in China, as well as on the principles for health reforms in developing countries.

Dr. Werner Christie
Dr. Werner Christie is a former Minister of Health of Norway in Dr. Brundtland’s Cabinet between September 1992 and December 1995, and former Chair of the Biotechnology Advisory Board of Norway and the WHO’s Stop TB public private partnership. Werner is a Medical Doctor also educated in Social Sciences. He also has more than 13 years experience as a part-time farmer.
