More than 55 Participants joined the Seminar on Preparing for a potential escalation of the Avian Flu on 9 May. Mr. Kevin Biggs, Senior Consultant, Risk Intelligence, Hill & Associates, and Mr. John Macpherson, Director of Crisis Consulting at Control Risks, provided an update on the current avian flu status and on preparations that business can undertake in case of a potential escalation of the virus. In addition, Dr. Christelle Swanepoel, Raffles Medical Shanghai, fielded audience questions at this highly practical, interactive event.

China Shanghai International Technology Fair

The European Chamber was invited to join the 2013 China Technology Fair Innovation Summit which was held on the first day of the China (Shanghai) International Technology Fair (CSITF). It featured two panel discussions, the first one focused on challenges and opportunities for multinational corporations in China’s economic transition while the second one examined how corporations can build innovative systems and strategies in China.
In cooperation with the SME IPR Helpdesk, the European Chamber had a booth in the Fair’s IPR pavilion to showcase both SME IPR Helpdesk and Chamber services to visiting government officials and more than 30,000 visitors. The Chamber also supported the Innovation Summit 2013 on the Fair’s opening day on 8 May, which featured two panel discussions on strategy and innovation. The first panel focused on the challenges and opportunities for MNCs in China’s economic transition, while the second panel examined how corporations can build innovative systems and strategies in China.

First edition of Capital Beat held in Shanghai

The first edition of Capital Beat, the quarterly public affairs seminar, was held on 16th April 2013, at The Westin Bund Center Shanghai. Leading China experts Vijay V. EUROPE was the main destination last year for Chinese overseas direct investment (ODI). According to a new report by A CAPITAL, an investment fund, Chinese ODI into Europe in 2012 shot up to $12.6 billion (see chart), 21% more than in 2011. Though some countries are equivocal about a Chinese presence (see article) others welcomed investment in companies ranging from Weetabix, an English food brand, to EDP, a Portuguese utility.
