China-EU Energy Conference with positive outlooks for the industry and environment in China

China, the world's second-biggest consumer of oil on February 20th and 21st, 2006 hosted the 6th China-European Union Energy Co-operation Conference in Shanghai. The Conference was jointly organised by the Ministry of Technology and Sciences MOST and the Directorate-General for Energy and Transportation from the EU Commission.

The delegation from Brussels was lead by the Commissioner for Energy Mr. Andris Piebalgs, who on the occasion of the Conference signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Chinese Vice Minister of Technology and Sciences Ma Songde. The agreement on near-zero emissions power generation technology marked the first stage of the development of the technology in China.  All participants stressed that China plays an important role in the effort to fight against global climate change and therefore should play a more active role under the Kyoto Protocol.

Among the speakers was Mr. Xavier Chen, Chairmen of the Energy & Utility Working Group of the European Chamber. In his speech he stressed the need for China to work on a coherent and integrated national energy policy as well as strengthen cross sector efforts, highlighting that the only way China can secure future energy demands is through diversification of energy sources such as oil, coal, wind, solar, water and nuclear power. Here foreign companies could significantly support China in its efforts.
