On 12th May 2009 EU Ambassador Serge Abou delivered an exclusive briefing on "The Future of EU-China Commercial Relations" at an event co-organised by the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China and the EU-China Managers Association (EUCMA). The briefing attracted an audience of more than 140 people including members of the European Chamber, members of EUCMA, Chinese and foreign journalists and others from the European business community.

Regarding the current financial crisis, Ambassador Abou complimented the measures taken by Chinese government and called for greater cooperation between EU and China to help businesses overcome the challenges ahead. He said, "The EU and China have both taken proactive steps to get our economies moving again and we should focus on making sure our economic relationship is fair and open."

Commenting on the trade relations, Ambassador Abou also pointed out, "With China’s exports shrinking, the country is shifting its focus to the domestic market, which consists of more than 1.3 billion people. Satisfying the needs of the country’s people is more important than international trade, and China should address this issue."

The briefing was followed by a Q&A and a networking among all the participants.

Coinciding with the celebration of Europe Day on 9th May, this unique event also marked the launch of the EUCMA's activities for 2009.
