On April 23, 2019, revisions of China’s Trademark Law passed into law by the National People’s Congress Standing Committee. The amendment aims at enhancing intellectual property protections and seemingly addresses US concerns over forced technology transfer and IP theft. It is noticeable that the amendment seeks to penalize “bad-faith trademark registrations without intent to use”. The amendment to the Trademark Law will take effect on November 1, 2019.
