Shipbuilding Working Group Kick Off Meeting

The shipbuilding sector is going through drastic changes that are set to shape the industry for the next decade. The central government is actively pursuing a policy of consolidation, pushing once broken monopolies back together: clear examples are the merger of the CSSC with the CSIC, currently China's biggest shipbuilding companies expected to control, once merged, 20% of the global market as well as the talks on a strategic merger between CMIH, CIMC and AVIC INTL, respectively the 4th, 5th and 7th biggest Chinese corporations in the sector.

Against such backdrop, the Shipbuilding Working Group invites you to its first official meeting. The scope of the event will be discussing the Working Group action plan and advocacy priorities for the coming year, deciding what kind of actions will be appropriate to better advocate for the points expressed in the position paper, analyzing the main outcomes of the EU-China dialogue on Shipbuilding of July 31st.

In June 2017 China’s Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) published a draft Export Control Law for public comment. Almost two years later, amidst escalated Sino-US tension the draft Export Control Law re-emerged, listed in the State Council’s Legislative Work Plan for 2019. If enacted, the Export Control Law will be the country’s first law specifically addressing matters of export control.

The Chinese Consumer in 2019

Media reports of slowing SUV sales and a bounce back in the popularity of instant noodles have been cited as evidence of an apparent “consumption downgrade” over the last 18 months. With the Chinese government keen to continue to push a more balanced economic growth model less dependent on investment and increasingly driven by consumption, such a cyclical slowdown is obvious cause for concern, and likely underscored a series of recent tax reform measures intended to stimulate spending.
