President Wuttke Meets with CCPIT Chair Ren Hongbin

On 12th July, a European Chamber delegation led by President Jörg Wuttke met with Ren Hongbin, chair of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT).

Chair Ren welcomed the delegation and thanked the European Chamber for its work in promoting trade and investment between the European Union (EU) and China. He said the EU-China relationship is very important for both sides and there are a lot of potential areas for further bilateral cooperation, such as carbon neutrality, digital economy and others. The chair said CCPIT looks forward to working closely with the European Chamber and its members in these areas.

President Wuttke thanked Chair Ren for organising the meeting, and expressed his appreciation for the CCPIT’s support in facilitating high-level dialogues between senior Chinese leadership and European business. President Wuttke then briefed Chair Ren on the main findings of the Chamber’s recently released European Business in China Business Confidence Survey 2022, including that although European business are committed to staying in China, they are concerned by the unpredictability of China’s COVID control measures and the recent geopolitical tensions. President Wuttke said China is a market with great potential for European business but companies need a predictable business environment in order to thrive. Mr Huang Xiaojun, chair of the Environment Working Group, Ms Annie Yin, chair of the Healthcare Equipment Working Group, and Ms Liu Chang, chair of the Government Affairs Forum, raised the concerns of their individual working groups.

Chair Ren said that China chose its approach to containing the COVID virus in order to best protect the public health and balance the economic growth. He added that China is working on improving its COVID control measures to support the economic recovery. He reiterated that China will continue to reform and open up, and said he looked forward to more cooperation between the European Chamber and the CCPIT.
