Meeting with METI and Japanese Embassy

Secretary General Adam Dunnett met with Director General Takehiko Matsuo from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry to discuss the business environment in China. Adam presented the findings from the Chamber’s recent publication 18 Month’s Since Davos. They also discussed key issues surrounding efforts to reform the WTO including the need for improved functioning of rule-making; ensuring implementation of existing rules and principles; and recent challenges about the appointment of members to WTO’s appellate body.

They also discussed overcapacity issues stemming from China’s industrial policies. Adam Dunnett congratulated the Japanese Government on signing of the Free Trade Agreement with the European Union, the largest free trade deal ever that has paved the way for the eventual elimination of 99% of tariffs on all traded goods between the EU and Japan. Adam expressed his hope that this would encourage China and the EU to make further advances on the negotiations for an EU-China Comprehensive Agreement on Investment.
