A delegation of the European Chamber led by Vice President Patrick Horgan had a lunch meeting with DG GROW Director Generalfor Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs Lowri Evans.

The Chamber delegation outlined how it viewed the 19th Party Congress the state of China’s reform agenda, China’s differing approach to aligning with or departing from international standards based on how competitive it was in a given industry, developments in the shipbuilding industry, regulation of New Energy Vehicles as well as plans to publish a report on State Council Document No. 39 in 2018.

Regarding the topic of investment screening, DG GROW reported that a number of EU Member States remained opposed to the Commission’s proposal to coordinate on sharing information among members on foreign investment and some investment screening due to their conception of free trade. The Chamber delegation therefore decided that it would engage with representatives of the Beijing-based Embassies of Member States who hold this view. The Chamber also suggested questions concerning the implementation of State Council Document No. 39 that DG GROW could ask Chinese government officials during meetings in Beijing.
