European Chamber Annual General Meeting 2008

The European Chamber’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Executive Committee (ExCo) elections were held at the EU Delegation in Beijing on Thursday, 17th April, with Ambassador Serge Abou, Head of the EU Delegation, acting as Honorary Chair in accordance with our Articles of Association. This year’s AGM attracted a large turn-out of 83 members, with a further 113 members registering proxy votes.

Joerg Wuttke presented the  President's Annual Report 2007 and Carlo Frondaroli presented his  Treasurer's Report. Votes on resolutions were taken. Passed with the required two thirds majority (of a quorum of at least 25% of EUCCC’s voting members) was a resolution to drop the dual membership rule, under which EUCCC’s members must be members of their national chamber of commerce, if one exists in the Chinese city where the company is based.  This rule is therefore no longer in effect. Further resolutions were passed to change the date of election of Working Group Chairs from after the AGM to the first quarter of the year (to ensure Working Group stability during work on the annual Position Paper); and to simplify the Working Group process by reducing the quorum for the Working Group meeting to two members.

Joerg Wuttke (BASF), Carlo Frondaroli (Nokia) and Jacques de Boisseson (Total) were re-elected unopposed to the Executive Committee positions of President, Treasurer and Vice President respectively. Tom Behrens-Sorensen (Maersk) and Lyn Kok (Standard Chartered) were newly elected, unopposed, as Vice Presidents. Taking their leave from ExCo on completion of their term of office were Giancarlo Grech (Pirelli) and Henry Wang (Shell), to whom votes of thanks were made.

Ho Kiam Kong of Philips, recently re-elected Local Chair of EUCCC Shanghai, is again co-opted to ExCo as Vice President, in accordance with our Articles of Association (Shanghai Chapter having more than 200 members). The Articles also provide that the Local Chair of a Chapter with more than 50 members shall be co-opted to ExCo as a non-voting Member. From Chengdu, Pascal Hermandesse (Atexis); from Nanjing, Hans Christian Marxen (BASF); and from Pearl River Delta, Alberto Vettoretti (Dezan Shira) therefore join ExCo in this capacity.

The election of the new ExCo will be completed on 22nd April, when representatives of the 27 EU Member State business communities meet in Beijing as the EUCCC Supervisory Board, to elect three of their number to ExCo as States Representatives.
