European Chamber signs Memorandum of Understanding with Jiangsu and Guangdong Offices for IPR Protection

Beijing, 8th November 2006. The European Union Chamber of Commerce in China, the leading exponent of European business interests in China and the Voice of European Business in China, is pleased to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the provincial representatives of the State Office of Intellectual Property Protection (SOIPP) from Jiangsu and Guangdong responsible for the coordination of Service Centres for Intellectual Property Protection.  In line with the European Chamber's efforts to improve the overall IPR environment in China, this MoU aims to enhance cooperation and the exchange of information so as to improve the overall effectiveness of the IP Service Centres. This agreement will result in improved dialogue with the relevant provincial authorities responsible for addressing IP issues of concern to European industry.

The signing ceremony at the Ministry of Commerce in Beijing, was witnessed by Minister Bo Xilai and EU Commissioner Mandelson. "I welcome the establishment of a Chinese IPR complaint center network which will be a useful tool in seeking practical advice and assistance on IP theft," Peter Mandelson said in a statement following the ceremony.

The European Chamber is dedicated to developing greater cooperation and dialogue with the Chinese government so as to provide constructive recommendations on overcoming the many IP-related challenges seen in China today. The European Chamber recently expressed its key concerns and recommendations with regards to IPR protection in China in the 2006 Position Paper. This Memorandum of Understanding highlights the European Chamber's commitment to a constructive approach based upon dialogue as well as the sharing of knowledge and best-practices.
