European Chamber Visit to Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce 

On 1st July, headed by Shanghai Chairman Piter de Jong, the European Chamber visited Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce (SCC) and presented European Business in China Position Paper 2009/2010 (click here to download the Position Paper) to Mr. Sha Hailin, Deputy Secretary General of Shanghai Municipal People's Government, Chairman of Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce. During the meeting, the two sides had exchanges on previous and future cooperation and came to mutual agreement of setting up a long-term Dialogue Mechanism between SCC and EUCCC, which is the first ever between SCC and foreign Chamber of Commerce.

On behalf of the Shanghai Municipality as well as SCC, Mr. Sha praised the significant contributions that the European Union and its Member States have made towards the EXPO Shanghai 2010. Mr.Sha congrated the irreplaceable role that the EUCCC has played as the voice of European Business in Shanghai and China. He also emphasised that, in the globalisation context, Shanghai Municipality has always been keen to hear from international players and learn from each other. He suggested strengthen the communication and cooperation not only through quarterly meetings but also consolidated information exchanges. It was also proposed to develop specific study and research together in the long run.

Mr.de Jong reiterated that European companies took 5 spots among the top 10 largest foreign-invested companies in Shanghai. Shanghai is the biggest Chapter of the European Chamber in terms of the number of member companies and EU businesses continue to view Shanghai as a promising business location in China. Secretary General Mr. Moens also added that the EUCCC highly appreciated SCC’s understanding of industry issues at both local and national level given the significance of Shanghai's role and weight in the policy making procedure at national level amongst other factors.
