Over the last decades, the lifestyle of Chinese residents has undergone significant changes due to the rapid processes of industrialisation, urbanisation, and population aging. This transformation has presented new challenges in the health domain. In response, the Chinese Government has prioritised 'Healthy China' since 2016.

This trend creates opportunities for biopharmaceutical companies, supported by favourable policies from local governments. Qidong Economic Development Zone, located in the Yangtze River Economic Belt, is one of the examples. With the life-health industry as one of its key pillars, it has issued subsidy policies and now boasts over 60 biopharmaceutical companies.

The European Chamber invites you to join this session for further insights into the future of the life-health domain.

Every year, China’s ‘Two Sessions (Lianghui)’ convenes the national legislature and top political advisory body to discuss key political and economic issues and make central decisions. The Two Sessions hold significance for the international business community as they will establish the political and economic direction for China for 2024. In the preceding provincial Two Sessions, some key themes will be ‘new quality productivity’, ‘expanding domestic demand’, and ‘deepening reforms’, while seeking progress while maintaining stability, consolidating the foundation for economic recovery, and expanding high-level opening-up will be the main areas of focus.

China’s emphasis on green and sustainable development offers a fertile ground for businesses in sustainable urban development. Integral to this are initiatives such as China’s Five-Year Plan, the Urban Renewal Action Plan (2023-2025), and local programs for green development and urban planning. These initiatives set forth ambitious goals for achieving ultra-low energy consumption in construction and have laid the groundwork for the adoption of green transportation projects. European SMEs, with their established practices in eco-friendly construction and sustainable transportation, are well-positioned to make a significant impact in China’s growing green and sustainable urban development sector and to export their expertise and sustainable solutions.

Over 2023, the global landscape underwent various international crises, from the protracted conflict in Ukraine to the unrest in the Gaza Strip, which have had far-reaching negative effects on the global and regional economy. For all the economic worries of a real estate crisis, government debt overload, and high youth unemployment, China looks to have managed an acceptable 5+% year growth off its low base of 2022 and the outlook for 2024 is subdued at around 4+%. Against the backdrop of significant geopolitical shifts, the evolving dynamics between China, the European Union, and the United States — the world's leading economic powers — are central to understanding the future direction of international business and commerce.

Policy-makers worldwide increasingly see happiness as an important and overarching objective of public policy. With encouragement from the OECD, nearly all its member states now measure the happiness of their people annually.
