The European Chamber is delighted to invite you to attend a presentation and discussion on Trade Disputes, Uncertainties and the Impact on Supply Chains, which will take place on Friday, 29th November, from 13:30 to 15:00, at the European Chamber Shanghai office.

The world we live in now has never been more interconnected. The powerful yet unpredictable blend of trade, technology and globalisation has extended to us just as many benefits as it has risks. While some are reaping the benefits of this rapid worldwide integration, many others are stuck trying to mitigate its risks. To add another layer of complexity, businesses in China are also avoiding the adverse effects of the ongoing trade war and navigating China’s unique business environment. Is it even possible to make sense of this hypercomplexity?

Mr. Jon Cowley, an International Trade Partner from Baker& McKenzie Hong Kong, will share critical insights on how current trade disputes and uncertainties are affecting company supply chains across China and APAC and what are the strategies one can adopt to surpass resulting challenges. If you would like to further your ability to navigate today’s complex business environment with the latest insights on trade developments, we strongly encourage you to join our event!

Chinese government authorities have recently issued a series of policies and draft amendments to push forward the establishment of the Social Credit System (SCS). Foreign enterprises are particularly concerned at how the SCS could affect the business operation of their Chinese subsidiaries.

The SCS will establish an information-sharing platform covering all the rating information on all companies registered in China. In principle, the equal enforcement of regulations will likely to create a more level playing field. However, this may be an overly optimistic interpretation, as the system does have the potential for discriminatory use towards international companies, as well as other major concerns such as the “joint sanctions” – blacklisted companies will receive not only sanctions from the government enforcement authority, but should restrictions and negative treatment from other government agencies.
