Since China ended its ‘zero-COVID’ strategy, Chinese officials have been on a charm offensive in an attempt to restore the country’s allure as an investment destination. However, more will need to be done if China is to successfully reverse the deterioration of business sentiment that has taken place over the past three years.

With the rapid development of Internet technology, more and more enterprises choose to carry out business through network channels. Internet activities -- that is, all kinds of behaviors and activities involving the network, such as online activity promotion, shopping, social media, online games, etc., require the audience to provide personal information, such as name, address, email, etc., to complete registration, login, purchase and other operations. Along with this comes the increase of security risks such as personal information leakage. In order to protect the interests of consumers and enterprises themselves, enterprises must pay extra attention to the personal information Protection law and relevant regulations compliance.

At the end of 2022, the Chinese government issued a series of measures to ease epidemic prevention and control and shifted to normal. The Central Economic Work Conference also clarified the economic goal of "seeking progress while maintaining stability" in 2023, and more policies to support enterprises are expected to be released. However, in the early stage of strategy transformation, relevant policies domestic and abroad are still being updated and changed. Especially, the first and second quarters are still in the high epidemic period, and enterprises are still facing the pressure brought by numerous external uncertainties when their vitality has not recovered. Employment management and cost control have also become one of the most concerned issues for enterprises at this stage.

For multinational corporations operating in China, repatriating cash from their subsidiaries has always been an important but challenging issue. China maintains a strict system of foreign exchange controls, meaning funds flowing into and out of China are tightly regulated.
Further, depending on the bilateral Double Taxation Agreements between China and the contracting country where the foreign parent company is located, generating income in China has tax implications which might affect the overall tax burden of both the China-based subsidiary company and the foreign parent company.
