FOREIGN MANUFACTURER'S ASSOCIATION
Running a Factory in a Developing Country:
Staying Responsible
From Gideon Milstein, CBL Group,
Member of the European Chamber PRD Chapter, Chair of the Foreign Manufacturers association and Committee Member of British Chamber of Commerce Guangdong.
Foreign owned businesses in China generally operate to the strict ethical and moral systems applicable in the west but with an understanding of the way things get done in an emerging economy. I've heard of many, and been involved in some, situations where taking a western moral high ground has proven to be an extremely poor commercial decision, not only costing significant amounts of money, but also putting the business at a severe disadvantage against others who operate to less exacting rules. The price pressures applied by large multinationals don't allow for this disadvantage, and yet these are the very organisations generating the drive towards social auditing and a spotless moral code. Are they merely trying to show the world a clean pair of hands while generating the very abuses and shortcuts their pricing policies force factories to adopt, or are they genuinely interested in making China and the other emerging economies morally stronger?
In this session we'll be looking into the increasing popularity of social audits, how they're conducted and the reality of their findings. We'll also be looking at new corruption and inducement regulations from the UK and Europe which suggest potentially huge fines for businesses operating under these flags in China. These new regulations may be very easy to transgress in an environment where corruption is endemic and part of the normal way of life, so we'll be looking at the areas of risk and planning how to avoid these.
Finally we'll be looking at environmental, energy conservation, social, labour, Health and Safety trends and proposed legislation, with discussions on how these may effect our businesses.
If you're in manufacturing or supply chain management then this should be a very informative meeting with an opportunity to discuss with others, their plans on dealing with these new challenges in doing business, here in China.
