EUCCC Wine Dinner III
EUCCC's Classic Northern Italian Wines Embrace Creative Cuisine
In-line with the goal of the first two EUCCC dinners of offering the excellent wines and superior cuisine in attractive, unpretentious settings, the European Chamber is pleased to offer members and their guests to experience the greatness of northern Italian wines at one of Shanghai's top new restaurants.
Wine writer and EUCCC wine consultant
John H. Isacs has selected a range of Italian wines from two of the most famous regions of northern Italy, Veneto and Piedmont, to harmoniously pair with the innovative and artistic cuisine of
Chef Austin Hu of the Madison Restaurant, located at the heart of the French Concession.
Living and working in the U.S. and China, Chef Austin Hu has an impressive background of classical French training at the prestigious French Culinary Institute in New York City and experience working with some of New York's top chefs at renowned restaurants like Gramercy Tavern and Restaurant Amuse.
Using his experience in classical French cooking and New American Cuisine, while keeping to his philosophy of using in-season ingredients from local artisan producers, Chef Austin has developed an inspired menu to embellish the qualities of Italian wines. Restaurant manager Ethan Tian, one of the few certified sommeliers in Shanghai, will over see the service and showcase the understated elegance that has made Madison Restaurant one of Shanghai's new gourmet hot spots. Come discover the synergistic beauty of top northern Italian wines paired with the inspired locavore cooking of Chef Austin.
NINE NORTHERN ITALIAN CLASSICS ~ the event begins with the famous Venetian cocktail
Bellini (Prosecco with peach juice) served as an aperitif. Then, as guests are seated, the meal commences with the lovely Veneto rose sparkling wine
Tenuta St. Anna Cuvee Rose Brut NV, followed by two whites: the
Zonin Collection Soave DOC, 2008, a lovely interpretation of Veneto's most beloved white wine, and Pio
Cesare Gavi DOCG, 2008, Piedmont's most important white wine.
A series of northern Italian reds begins with the
Michele Chiarlo, Barbera d'Asti Superiore Le Orme DOC, 2006, Piedmont's most versatile red wine, then the
Zonin Valpolicella Ripasso DOC, 2007, a robust Veneto red made using a rediscovered process from the ancient Romans, and served with the main course the "king of Italian wines" the
Pio Cesare Barolo DOCG, 2005.
Accompanying the dessert will be
Pio Cesare Moscato d'Asti DOCG, 2007, Piedmont's classic sweet wine, and finally with coffee the
Alexander Sambuca Bianca Cellini from Veneto as a digestif.
SEVEN COURSE SUMPTUOUSLY CREATIVE FEAST ~ the meal commences with
Herbed crab salad on brioche with pickled shallots served as an amuse bouche, then
Fluke with grapefruit and crispy candied ginger as a cold appetizer, followed by
Gnocchi with shrimp, chorizo, and parsley, then
Jinhua ham wrapped sturgeon with glazed root vegetables.
As the Italian reds turn serious we will have two meat dishes;
Squab with oyster mushrooms and ozmanthus sauce and
Lamb loin with sweet potatoes, sherry sauce, and braised greens. Finally to give the evening a sweet finish
Dark chocolate panna cotta with pomegranate syrup and chocolate vin cotto.
As usual, there will also be a prize draw for a few lucky attendees to wine a bottle of one of the excellent wines they've just imbibed!
