The European Chamber Shanghai Chapter is excited to commemorate the 6th consecutive year of our Sustainable Business Awards (SBA). The 2022 edition will continue to put sustainability awareness at the forefront of its focus, recognizing companies who push for sustainable economic growth, environmental care and social welfare. On 15th September 2022, the European Chamber will host a ceremony in Shanghai to announce the winners of this year's edition.
SBA 2022 Introduction Session
For this introduction session, we would like to welcome all interested applicants for our SBA, members and non-members of the Chamber, on Tuesday, 14th June at 2:30pm (GMT+8), to the online Zoom webinar, joined by our SBA knowledge partner, SynTao. This session will detail the 2022 SBA, including award categories, time schedule, evaluation process, methodology, what makes a successful case, as well as a Q&A session to answer any further questions. Those who are interested in applying to the 2022 SBA will find this session beneficial for understanding all new developments involved. Ms Tiantian Qi from European Chamber Shanghai will introduce the general idea of the 2022 SBA and the evaluation process. Mr Jilai Peng from SynTao will introduce all award categories, evaluation methodology and observations.
Sustainable CEO Talk Series: Pioneer in Advancing Rural Revitalisation
Pioneer in Advancing Rural Revitalisation continues to be one of 2022 awards categories. In 2021, Comprehensively Advancing Rural Revitalisation was listed in China's 14th Five-Year Plan, marking its development into a new stage. This award recognises a company’s achievement in overall strategic planning and pioneering role of facilitating multi-stakeholders to explore a feasible pathway to realise rural revitalisation. The award is designed into 5 sub-categories this year, with a broad spectrum under rural revitalisation.

What are the Sustainable Business Awards?
Since being established in 2017, the European Chamber’s Sustainable Business Awards have been improving, growing, and promoting awareness. In collaboration with our knowledge partner, SynTao, the objective of the European Chamber SBA is to:
- Highlight innovative leadership achievement
- Advance sustainability awareness
- Promote responsible business models
What are 2022 awards categories?
Each category will require a detailed strategy and policy, stakeholder engagement, practice and measures, organizational structure and other factors implemented by the company or organization. Categories are adapted to best reflect CSR standards and continue to follow United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals and China’s long-term policies on environmental protection and rural revitalisation.

Application eligibility applies to all companies and organisations, whether they are members or not of the European Chamber. Members of the European Chamber do not have an application fee, non-members do have a 2,500 RMB application fee. Multinational Companies (MNCs) and Small and mid-size enterprises (SMEs) are eligible to apply to all categories. There will be separate awards for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) for each category. All applications will be assessed based on criteria given, by nine judges who represent academia, varied businesses, and social organizations within sustainability field.
The award winners will be announced at the 2022 European Chamber Sustainable Business Awards Ceremony on 15th September 2022. There will be highlights of winners to be published on social media, online, and on the European Chamber Shanghai platforms.
Why the Sustainable Business Awards?
The European Chamber Sustainability Business Awards have been continuously improving, growing, and promoting awareness since being established in 2017. Each year categories, criteria and requirements are adapted to best reflect Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) standards. Notably, our award categories continue to follow United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals and China’s long-term policies on environmental protection and rural revilalisation.
The application process will bring about a deeper understanding of CSR, company goals and opportunities. The Sustainable Business Awards focus on stakeholder engagement and long-term impact. The judging criteria is systematic and objective; the evaluation process is open and transparent. We always welcome feedback as we value continuous improvement.

Advisory Council Policy:

Mr. Jens Ewert
Mr. Jens Ewert
Jens Ewert, a Senior Partner with Deloitte China, has over 30 years of working experience in the professional services, based in Shanghai since end 2002 – he has been a member of Deloitte China Eastern Region Management team since then. Jens is the national leader for Deloitte China Life Science & Health Care Industry, leading a dedicated industry team comprising over 1000+ partners and professionals. He also covers our full range of multidisciplinary services, from consulting, risk & financial & tax advisory and audit & assurance, offering to Multinational Clients in China.
Jens has received the ‘Magnolia Silver Award’ from the Shanghai Government in September 2021, recognizing foreign business leaders for their special and outstanding contribution to the City’s development. He is also a Board member at the EUCCC Shanghai and the National Vice-Chair of the Investment Working group at the EU Chamber in China.
Prior to moving to China, he has been working in numerous countries always in professional services, such as France, Hungary, Vietnam and Indonesia. He hold a Master degree from University Paris X Dauphine in Business & Finance and a Diploma of Political Science from Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris. He also attended numerous executive programs at IMD and Insead. He is married to Christine and calls France his home.
Mr. Paul Schuilwerve
Mr. Paul Schuilwerve
Paul Schuilwerve joined Rabobank China on December 1, 2020 as Chief Executive Officer. Prior to this, he worked from 2017 as CEO & Country Head for Rabobank in India. He is further member of Rabobank's Asia Management Committee.
Paul started his career at Bank Mees & Hope in 1986. Since 1995, he embarked upon an international career with secondments in Hong Kong/Shanghai, London and Singapore. Prior to joining Rabobank, he was responsible for Corporate Banking International with ABN AMRO.
He has held various board positions focused on international trade. Amongst these EVO Fenedex, International Chamber of Commerce Netherlands, and the Netherlands Council of Trade Promotion. He is further a member of advisory board ESE Marketing Master Program of the Erasmus University Rotterdam and was a member of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) in India.
Throughout his career he has published and presented various papers at conferences. The latest in Feb 2021 at the Erasmus University titled: Brand breakout: a view from China. He is furthermore passionate about topics such as Sustainability and Climate Change.
Mr. Jilai Peng
Mr. Jilai Peng
Mr Peng Jilai is the General Manager and Partner of SynTao Consulting Beijing Office, Director of China CSR Map (CCM), a certified trainer for Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and lecturer of SynTao Academy.
Mr Peng has over 15 years of CSR/ESG consultancy experience and has served many clients in the automobile, FMCG, healthcare, financing, ICT and IDC industries. He is professional in developing sustainability strategy and ESG management systems, CSR internal & external communication, CSR training, CSR/ESG reporting, CSR program planning, monitoring and evaluation.
Besides business consultancy, Mr Peng is heavily involved with corporate-NGO cooperation and has successfully developed a dozen of cross-sector partnership. He is also proficient with charity project implementation and evaluation and he particularly focus on child development, gender, rural revitalization, environment & climate change, health & nutrition issue. Mr Peng provides advisory service for a dozen of large foundations and NGOs.
Before joining SynTao, Mr Peng worked for four years as Project Coordinator with GIZ on Sino-German CSR Project. Mr Peng earned his bachelor degree in English Language and Literature from Capital Normal University.

Ms. Tiantian Qi
Tiantian is a Senior Business Manager with a demonstrated history of working in the Sino-EU government relations industry. Skilled in Corporate Social Responsibility, International Relations, Programme Design and Policy Analysis across the food and beverage sector, auto sector as well as the satellite industry.
During her role leading the CSR Forum of the European Chamber, she organised European Chamber 10th Anniversary Conference in 2015 and coordinated with more than 30 member companies’ speakers, led (edited, designed, coordinated) and managed the CSR White Paper project which includes the liaison and coordination of more than 10 Member States Consulate Generals in Shanghai and 20 sponsor companies in 2016; Organised the European Chamber Shanghai Chapter first Sustainable Business Awards and designed seven series of CEO Talks; Organised the Dutch Minister of Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation CSR Dialogue at the European Chamber in April 2018 and the 2018 SBA in September; Established Shanghai Local Media (Shine: Shanghai Daily App) cooperation with European Chamber and launched European Chamber Sustainable Column at Shanghai Daily in 2017; Led the European Chamber CSR Team teach at Shanghai University for its MBA students on CSR together with the Swedish CSR Ambassador in summer 2017, 2018 and 2019; Led the CSR delegation join the European Commission Multi-Stakeholder Meeting in Brussels and coordinate the member speech delivered on CSR in China on February 2015 (First time in the history of the Multi-Stakeholder meeting to host delegates from China and hear China CSR practice).
