1. Background information
Some European companies which are buying tools and moulds in China face the problem that the life time of this tooling might be lower compared to toolings which were imported from Europe. Besides the problem of the restricted life time, toolings of inferior quality might produce parts at a higher scrap rate. The quality of the tooling is depending on the material of tooling as well as the processing of it. In many cases the material properties might not be good enough to meet the technical requirements. In such cases heat treatment processes are used in order to improve the mechanical properties of the tooling which ultimately lead to higher life time, as well as higher accuracy and reliability of the tooling. One major heat treatment process which is especially wide spread in Germany (but so far barely available in China), is the so called Plasma Nitration.
Plasma Nitration is a method for the surface hardening of metals, in particular of steel. Herein, the substrate is connected with a cathodic potential and exposed to a nitrogen / hydrogen plasma at elevated temperatures. This leads first to the removal of surface oxide, then nitrogen ions are incorporated in the metal structure close to the surface, resulting in an increased surface hardness. Furthermore, sliding properties and corrosion resistance are improved in many cases. Beside steel and aluminium, also titanium and other metals can also be plasma nitrided.
