Participation in the 2022 Working Conference on China-Europe Energy Technology Innovation Cooperation

On 4th March, the China-Europe Energy Innovation Cooperation Office (the Office) organised the 2022 Annual Working Conference. Nearly 200 participants joined online, with the European Chamber Energy Working Group representatives and member companies playing the leading role. Pan Huimin, Deputy Director General of the International Department of the National Energy Administration (NEA), and Octavian Stamate, Counsellor for Energy and Climate Action, Delegation of the European Union to China, attended the meeting and delivered opening speeches. Jiang Shihong, Vice President of the Electric Power Planning and Engineering Institute moderated the whole session.

In her speech, Pan Huimin pointed out that technological innovation plays an important role in coordinating energy transition and energy security. China and Europe have a good complementarity in the field of energy technology innovation, with a solid foundation and broad prospects for cooperation. Over the past year, thanks to the coordination of the Office and the European Chamber, along with the joint efforts of Chinese and European leading units and participating units, the China-Europe Energy Technology Innovation Cooperation Platform (the Platform) has carried out fruitful exchanges in the fields of hydrogen energy, smart energy, energy storage and wind power. She hoped that the Platform will continue to expand the scope of cooperation and constantly improve its organisational structure and working mechanism. Octavian Stamate indicated that China and Europe share common goals in low-carbon transition, and hoped that in the future, China and Europe will jointly lead the global green development.

During the meeting, the Office introduced the current status of China-EU energy technology innovation cooperation. In 2021, the Platform has organised more than 40 exchange events, carried out more than 10 joint R&D and innovation incubation projects, and the cooperation network has covered 350 Chinese and European units. The next step will be to continue to promote pragmatic cooperation. At present, there are only four working groups, therefore the Office plans to establish new working groups that focus on specialised technical fields (e.g. carbon capture and storage, clean heating) and relevant countries with national innovation promotion agencies. The Office will also take the lead in formulating the working mechanism of demonstration projects, including project application, composition of joint expert groups, project screening and determination, dynamic tracking etc.

The Chinese and European lead units in the fields of hydrogen energy, smart energy, energy storage and wind power shared the specific work arrangements for each field this year, where the National Chair of the European Chamber Energy Working Group Zhonghua Xu and an official of the Science and Technology Department of the NEA made several suggestions. The conference comprehensively summarised the achievements in 2021 and mapped out the strategy and key directions for 2022.
