Chamber Vice President and South China Chair George Lau Presented South China Position Paper to Guangdong Department of Commerce

Chamber Vice President and South China Chair George Lau and Vice Chair Mr.Chee Keong Lai visited Department of Commerce (DOFCOM) of Guangdong Province on June 4th. During the meeting, Chair Lau presented the South China Position Paper to Vice Director General (DG) Mr. Chen Yuehua and Bureau Chief of Guangdong Investment Promotion Bureau Mr. Sun Bin.

During the meeting, Mr. Chen emphasised the importance of working with the European Union (EU), and appreciated the work the Chamber has done to connect the Guangdong government and European companies. He believes that Guangdong should further promote its investment policies by encouraging European companies to visit and consider south China for future expansion, including those companies located or headquartered in Beijing and Shanghai. The Europe-Guangdong Investment and Innovation Conference (CEIIC) is one good way for EU companies to get a better understanding of Guangdong's investment policies and opportunities.

Greater Bay Area (GBA) was also discussed in the meeting. Vice DG Chen mentioned DOFCOM is interested in organizing policy briefing with the European Chamber or being a speaker in European Chamber events on the topic of GBA. He also suggested the possibility of organizing EU companies’ representatives to experience the 1hour, 2 hours and 3 hours economic circles described in the GBA.

The two sides also exchanged opinions on the recent US-China trade conflict. Vice DG Chen said there is no winner of the trade war when business suffers on both sides. Additionally, they mentioned that DOFCOM is currently working hard to implement the central government's trade policies.
