T20 Qianhai International Financial Forum

The T20 Qianhai International Financial Forum was held at Shenzhen Wuzhou Guest House from Jan.27th to Jan 28th. Since its establishment four years ago, Think-20 (T20), a group of international premium think tanks and organizations, has been generating ideas and proposals for the G20 to consider, and to support cooperation among member states. It is one of the supporting events for the coming G20 meeting hosted by China in Hangzhou this year.

Vice-Secretary of Guangdong Provincial Party Committee, Secretary of Shenzhen Municipal Party Committee, Mr. Ma Xingrui attended the opening ceremony and delivered a welcome speech. Mr. Zhang Yuyan, head of Institute of World Economics and Politics Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and Mr. Vuk Jeremic, President of the United Nations General Assembly and President of the Center for International Relations and Sustainable Development also addressed the attendees.

The forum mainly focuses on the current state of global economic governance, and on whether it provides a solid base for sustainable global growth. In the first part, the speakers discussed the design and functioning of international monetary system, and its key bodies: the International Financial Institutions (IFIs), including the IMF, World Bank, the WTO and the regional development banks. In the second part, the speakers focused on the new responsibilities and challenges facing the IFIs and financial markets, and examine possible means of strengthening global cooperation.

Over 40 speakers from think tanks, international organizations, government institutes, and financial sectors participated in the forum discussions. The latest SDR status and internationalization of RMB was highlighted during the exchanges. Local speakers such as Director General of Qianhai Free Trade Zone Authority, Shenzhen Stock Exchange (SZSE) and Sun Yat-sen University shared their views on the development of financial industry in Qianhai.

This forum is hosted by the Institute of World Economics and Politics, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (IWEP_CASS), Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies, Renmin University of China (RDCY), Shanghai Institute for International Studies (SIIS), in collaboration with Shenzhen Municipality Government, Qianhai Free Trade Zone Authority, and the Royal Institute of International Affairs, Chatham House.
