On 24th April, the European Parliament voted and adopted the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), meaning it is now a legal responsibility for companies in the European Union (EU) to comply with the sustainability legislation and regulations indicated in the directive. Not complying with, or violating, legal requirements will lead to a significant financial or social impact for the company to bear.
While CSDDD is taking into effect in the EU, the directive also influences companies currently doing business in China. As part of its 30/60 carbon neutrality goals, China set a goal for renewable energy to exceed fossil fuel capacity by 2025. Additionally, the country has issued a new notice that brings China’s Green Energy Certificate (GEC) scheme to a new stage. This document officially affirms the GEC as the sole instrument to track renewable energy consumption in China.
