European Chamber Quarterly Briefing
January - March 2009

SUMMARY

The Chamber hopes that the Chinese government’s RMB 4 trillion stimulus package will focus on driving domestic consumption, environmental sustainability, education and healthcare, rather than extending a lifeline to certain indigenous industries that are already struggling with overcapacity.
The Chamber once again urges the Governments in China and Europe to resist the urge towards protectionism, and calls for further opening of China’s domestic market in all sectors. In the Chinese context, the Chamber believes that a level playing field for all businesses will better serve Chinese consumers by offering them more choice and thus driving consumption. Greater openness would also enable Chinese industry to benefit from the latest technology and innovations globally. This in turn will help boost development and economic growth.
Despite the economic slowdown globally, the Chamber still believes that China remains an attractive destination for foreign investment. Furthermore, the Chamber hopes that China can take a strong leadership role on the world stage to inject confidence in the economic recovery process worldwide.
