Growing Green – How Does Industry Leverage the Economic Opportunities in National Climate Targets?

On 27th November, the German Embassy in Beijing and the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China hosted an event on the role that industry can play in achieving national climate targets. With over 200 participants from Chinese, European and German companies and institutional stakeholders, European and Chinese experts discussed the importance of ambitious climate targets in Europe and China to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement.

In panel discussions, senior industry representatives debated the implications of the nationally determined contributions (NDCs) for the power sector and energy-intensive industries, such as steel and chemicals.

As Stephan Grabherr, deputy head of mission at the German Embassy, put it: “No single country and no single industry alone can translate climate goals into reality. When looking at the national climate goals for 2035, it becomes clear that they need to be ambitious and that companies will play a pivotal role. First movers will have significant advantages in gaining market share, protecting intellectual property rights and scaling up.”

European Chamber President Jens Eskelund added: “Addressing climate change is a shared global responsibility. The European Chamber and our 1,700 members remain committed to collaborating with stakeholders at all levels to turn China’s 30/60 Goals into reality.”
