Direct Routes to be Created Linking Established City Centre and Nanjing's 'New Areas'

At the beginning of February The Nanjing Construction Commission released plans to effectively re-construct No. 312 national highway, indicating that this section located in Nanjing will be named Xuanwu Road.

According to the commission, more than 300 million RMB will be invested in this project in order to reconstruct the 10 km road between Xinzhuang overpass (near Nanjing Expo Centre) and the bypass highway. This means that soon there will be a direct traffic connection between the northeast of the established city area and Xianlin.

Accompanying the economic rise and social development of the new city areas of Hexi, Xianlin and Jiangning, there has been a significant increase in the population and the number of cars. The capacity of present roads to accommodate this increased volume in traffic has long been overstretched, new plans for the 312 Highway will improve traffic flow and ease congestion that this new traffic causes between the main city area and the new city area. Construction of new connections will also be carried out on Nanjing-Lishui Road (from downtown to Jiangning) while Hankou Road will be extended (from downtown to Hexi). Three direct connecting roads between the main city area and new city areas will be in use later this year. Total investment in these three projects will exceed 1 billion RMB.

The broad aim of the reconstruction of the 312 Highway, according to the plan is to ease congestion in areas that suffer from the most frequent traffic jams. Measures to reach this end will include the construction of two new overpass bridges. Four ramp bridges, connecting Xuanwu Tunnel directly with Hongshan Road, Longpan Road and Nanjing Railway Station are also to be constructed. The national highway will also be widened. In addition, overpass bridges are to be constructed at Huangyuan Road and Wang Jia Wan Logistics Park.
