As part of its 30/60 carbon neutrality goals, China set a goal for renewable energy to exceed fossil fuel capacity by 2025. Additionally, China’s Green Energy Certificate (GEC) scheme is set to enter a new stage, with it becoming the sole instrument to track renewable energy consumption in China. Alongside this, China is taking firm steps towards standardising business carbon practices. The country's top economic planner, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), has announced that the country will speed up the establishment of a product carbon footprint (PCF) system.

A Beijing-born, US-educated professor at the London School of Economics, Keyu Jin works to connect East and West, with a particular interest in enhancing global understanding of what’s really going on within the Chinese political economy. Her research is on international economics--- such as why capital flows from poor to rich countries, how the global implications of U.S. monetary and fiscal policies have changed; as well as on how the rise of China impacts the global economy, from several perspectives ---trade, capital flows, global interest rates and saving, demographics, productivity and technology.

Data from the OECD indicates that SMEs in China contribute significantly to the country’s various economic sectors. However, SMEs face significant challenges in adopting sustainable practices and operations. In 2018, the Chinese National Environment Ministry reported penalties for environmental regulations violations as mostly incurred by SMEs.
