The 2024 European elections mark the beginning of a new chapter for the European Union. The incoming Members of the European Parliament will be pivotal in appointing key EU positions and will have a significant influence on shaping and enacting new EU legislation. They will also play a critical role in ratifying new trade agreements and policies.
Over the past years, EU-China relations have witnessed fluctuations, driven by geopolitical tensions, trade policies, and technological competition. This period has notably seen the EU adopting a more assertive stance towards China, characterised by increased scrutiny on trade and technology exchanges, alongside a complex political relationship. The results of the 2024 EU elections are set to further influence these dynamics, which may subsequently impact European enterprises in China in terms of trade barriers, market access, and investment conditions.
This event will provide a platform to discuss key questions relevant to European businesses operating in China: What potential shifts in EU foreign policy towards China can be expected post-elections? What are the implications of policy changes for European businesses operating in China? What strategies should European companies deploy to navigate the evolving political landscape effectively?
During this event, participants will gain insights into the complexities of EU-China political and economic relations and the implications for market operations, investment strategies, and the broader global economic environment.

Advisory Council Policy

Speakers
Mr. Carlo Diego D’Andrea

Mr. Carlo Diego D’Andrea
Founder and Managing Partner of D’Andrea & Partners Legal Counsel, and Founder of DP Group.
Graduated in Law at the University of Teramo (Italy), he then subsequently obtained a Masters’ degree in Corporate Advisor at LUISS University in Rome and a Diploma in Chinese Studies at Nanjing Normal University and is a member of the Italian Bar Association.
Mr. D’Andrea arrived in China in 2005 and is fluent in Italian (mother tongue), English, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. He mainly deals with cross-border mergers and acquisitions, assistance in ODI/FDI and intellectual property rights.
He is also acting as Vice President of the European Chamber and Chair of the Shanghai Chapter.
Dr. Agatha Kratz

Dr. Agatha Kratz
Agatha Kratz is a Director at Rhodium Group.
She heads Rhodium’s China corporate advisory team, as well as Rhodium’s research on European Union-China relations and China’s economic statecraft. She also contributes to Rhodium work on China’s global investment, industrial policy and technology aspirations.
Agatha holds a Ph.D. from King’s College London, on China’s railway diplomacy. Her previous positions include Associate Policy Fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations and Editor-in-Chief of its quarterly journal China Analysis, Assistant Editor for Gavekal-Dragonomics’ China Economic Quarterly, and Junior Fellow at Asia Centre in Paris.
Mr. Michele Geraci

Mr. Michele Geraci
Michele Geraci is an Italian politician and economist who focuses on policy-oriented research on International Trade, USA-EU-China Relations, Belt&Road, AI and Universal Basic Income and other current affairs. He served as the Undersecretary of State at the Italian Ministry of Economic Development, responsible for International Trade and Investment, and was the architect of Italy's participation in the Belt & Road Initiative and was a nominee for the role of Prime Minister of Italy. Recently, he has been appointed as the Head of the Foreign Affairs and International Trade Department of Independence Movement, a newly formed Italian political movement. The primary objective of this movement is to bridge the gap between the West and East within the context of the evolution towards a multipolar world. He holds the position of Adjunct Professor of Finance and Economics at New York University Shanghai and is an Honorary Professor at Peking University. Prior to his current roles, he worked for two decades as an Investment Banker (Merryll Lynch, Bank of America, DLJ, Schroders Asset Management) and Engineer (British Telecom) in London. He has been Knighted by the President of Italy, Mattarella, and the President of Georgia, Margvelashvili. He holds an MBA from MIT, speaks five languages and he is a frequent guest on international media and conferences.
Mr. Emmanuel Meril

Mr. Emmanuel Meril
Emmanuel Meril is Senior Director, Government affairs of COTY in China. He is graduated from Paris I, II and XI Law Schools and was admitted to the Paris Bar in 1993. He started his career in Greater China in 1992, working first as a lawyer and then as a strategy and government relations advisor. Among other positions, Emmanuel set up the CMS Francis Lefebvre China law office and managed it for 10 years. He also occupied the position of Vice-President, Government affairs of KERING in China. Emmanuel published numerous articles in business magazines, gave conferences and wrote several contributions about China law & tax.
Dr. André Rittermeier

Dr. André Rittermeier
André is the National Vice Chair, Research and Development Working Group, European Chamber, also the Head of Group Innovation & Sustainability Asia Pacific of Covestro, a German DAX listed company who is a leading supplier of premium polymers. He is responsible for Covestro’s regional Innovation & Sustainability activities in Asia Pacific including its regional Innovation center. André is a member of the Covestro leadership team in China. He has gained extensive experience in R&D, engineering, and production in his career.
Mr. Victor De Decker

Mr. Victor De Decker
Victor De Decker is a Research Fellow in the Europe in the World Programme at the Egmont Institute since January 2023. His research centres on geoeconomics, economic statecraft, international political economy, and economic security, with a particular focus on Asia.
Previously, Victor gained experience at the European Institute for Asian Studies (EIAS), the European Chamber of Commerce in Myanmar, the European Commission (DG INTPA), and Pfizer.
He holds a master’s degree in International Relations from Ghent University and is working towards a PhD in Geoeconomics at both his Alma Mater and the Royal Military Academy.
