Dear CSR Shanghai Community Members,
You are cordially invited to the next CSR Forum meeting at 10:00 am-12:00 pm, Tuesday 28th March. The European chamber is delighted to invite Ms. Lang Hua, Partner of SYNTAO, one of the leading CSR consultancies in China, to share the Low Carbon and Sustainable Consumption Report 2022 and join a panel discussion on Low Carbon and Sustainable Consumption challenges in China with speakers from Adidas, Chanel and the Mesta Group. Followed by the CSR Forum Shanghai 2023 Election.
Boosting Consumption & Reducing the Impact of Consumption
Consumption, despite being an important driving force for economic growth, has a significant impact on the climate crisis. Research from the Chinese Academy of Sciences shows that carbon emissions from residents' consumption account for 53 per cent of the total carbon emissions in society. We can predict that as the pandemic gradually eases and policies to boost consumption continue to strengthen, the accelerated rebound in consumption will inevitably lead to more carbon emissions. On the one hand, we need to promote consumption, and on the other hand, we need to reduce carbon emissions. How can we balance the overall impact of consumption and make the right choices?
The Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) highlighted that by 2050 – if the right lifestyle and behavioural changes are made, supported by the right policies, infrastructure, and technology - greenhouse gas emissions could be reduced by 40-70 per cent. There is a possibility that low-carbon consumption can help systematically reduce emissions, accelerate infrastructure and technological transformation, promote green and low-carbon transformations of products and services, and improve people's well-being, all while driving high-quality economic growth.
What is the status of low-carbon consumption among Chinese consumers? Who and what are the key influencers in low-carbon consumption? What factors will hinder or drive low-carbon consumption? What is the proportion of low-carbon consumption in daily expenses? How can companies seize the low-carbon consumption trend and create incremental markets in the post-pandemic era? These are all critical questions to be addressed during this discussion. Fiona Lang will share her observations on these trends and give her suggestions on potential responses. The panellists will also be sharing their best practices and observations with the audience.

Chair Elections:
The Corporate Social Responsibility Chair and Vice-Chairs play crucial roles in driving forum activities. The Corporate Social Responsibility Forum can have, at most, one Chair and two Vice-Chairs. According to European Chamber guidelines, members must be present at the Forum to register a vote for the Chair elections. One company, one vote.
In this meeting, the 2023 CSR Forum Chair Election will take place. The responsibilities of the Chairpersons include taking a leading role in the drafting of the Position Paper, communicating key messages to the Chinese and European governments and steering Working Group meetings. The required characteristics of a Chair and Vice Chair are that they are a senior industry representative with relevant industry expertise and government contacts, with the time and willingness to support the group. Previous participation in the Working Group is essential.
According to the European Chamber's internal best practices intended to promote new strategies and approaches for the operation of the group, the European Chamber recommends that a Chairperson should not exceed three years in his/her role and highly encourages all members interested in taking a leading role to put their name forward for election. Should you be interested in putting your name forward for the election or nominate any candidates, please firstly read the attached document which outlines the roles and responsibilities of a Chairperson and then please send a short biography and a motivation letter, stating whether you intend to run for Chair or Vice Chair and your plans to promote the Working Group to Ms. Tiantian Qi at tqi@europeanchamber.com.cn no later than 2pm, 21st March 2023. We have one chair position and one vice chair position for the CSR Forum Shanghai.
In accordance with European Chamber internal guidelines, another email will be sent to the Working Group prior to the election, with the biographies and motivation letters of all candidates attached. Voting for the election, one vote per company, must be conducted in person at the Working Group meeting after each candidate has had the opportunity to give a short speech on why they would like to run in the election. The duration of the term for both Chairs and Vice Chairs is one year. All elected Chairpersons must sign the attached Starter Kit, following the election. To familiarise yourself with the Code of Conduct and responsibilities as chairs, please refer to the attached Starter Kit.
We encourage as many of our members as possible to attend the meeting to have their say in the leadership and representation of the Forum in the year ahead.
