Dire challenges resulting from climate change are cementing sustainability and green growth as a necessity for all countries. This can be seen in the change in priorities of both the EU and China as they become more holistic and sustainability-focused in their approaches to economic growth. Ultimately, strong cooperation will be key in successfully tackling environmental problems, in what many agree is the world’s most significant challenge.
Inspiring commitments were made by the EU and China in the Joint Statement released during the 2019 EU-China Summit, to implement the Paris Agreement and Montreal Protocol, work on resolving a clean energy transition and take greater global leadership in environmental issues, among others. These pledges are particularly important given that the US continues to take enormous steps backwards in this regard. In late 2019, the European Commission presented its ambitious Green Deal, demonstrating strong determination to tackle the environmental challenges that Europe will face in the coming decades. China also continues to make significant progress in this regard, and is expected to make sustainability and green growth a priority in its 14th Five-year Plan.
As international relations become increasingly fractious in a post-COVID-19 world, how can the EU and China maintain strong cooperation on climate issues, and what best practices can they share with each other? Will the environmental commitments made in the Joint Summit bear real fruit? And will 2020 see a reset of the global agenda on environmental issues?
For answers to these questions and more, join the discussion with Virginijus Sinkevičius, EU Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Isabel Hilton, CEO of China Dialogue and Ma Jun, Director of the Institute of Public & Environmental Affairs (IPE) from 15:00 – 16:30 on 26th May (Beijing Time).
