Asia-Invest launches first seminar on the Asian IPR Regulatory Framework in Shanghai

Shanghai, 10th July 2008. The first seminar of the Asia Invest European Business Organisations (EBOs) Asian Regional IPR Protection Project on Asian IPR Regulatory Framework organised by the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China will be held today in Shanghai.

More than 250 participants will attend this seminar to discuss the IPR regulatory framework in Asia. It will bring together senior IP officials, judges and lawyers from China, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam. The discussions are based on results of 12-months of research work in all Asian countries concerned and will form the basis for a region-wide comparative study on IPR protection. Presentations from IP officials and judges on the legal framework for protection of Trade Marks, Patents and Copyrights on the first day of the conference will be complemented on the second day by panel discussions on selected topics relating to these three IP-protection areas. The conference has received strong support from the local IPR authorities in Shanghai. The second seminar on enforcement and border control is scheduled to take place on 28th and 29th August in Jakarta.

IPR protection has been a key issue in the Asian economic environment in recent years. EBOs held regional meetings against counterfeiting and piracy in Seoul in May 2005 and in Hanoi in 2006. These meetings were held as a joint initiative with Directorate General Enterprise of the European Commission (EC) and led to the decision that region-wide action should be taken in order to improve the overall situation of IPR protection in Asia. Building on these foundations, the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China submitted a proposal for an IPR Protection Project under the Asia Invest Program of the EC. The project was approved and commenced on 1st December 2006.

Dr. Michael Pulch, Minister Counsellor, Delegation of the European Commission to China commented, “Through this project the European Business Organisations intend to address this need [for publicly accessible data] by establishing a series of effective web-based communicative tools, thereby providing a platform where relevant organisations can share knowledge, expertise and experience in developing effective IP protection strategies."
